More about Charcoal

Shisha charcoal

The charcoal determines how evenly the heat reaches the shisha bowl. Our shop carries natural charcoal, i.e. charcoal made from pressed coconut shells. It is pre-heated before use, e.g. with a charcoal lighter.

BLACKCOCO’s and Aladin Coco

BLACKCOCO’s and Aladin Coco are natural charcoals made from coconut shells in various cube sizes. Size and contents are shown on each product page.

Lighting shisha charcoal correctly

Always light charcoal in well-ventilated rooms or outdoors and use it only once it is fully glowing. Burning charcoal produces carbon monoxide, so a CO detector in the room is advisable.

Goes with it

To go with the charcoal we carry shisha tobacco, including the flavors of our brand Holster.

Questions and answers about Charcoal

How long does shisha charcoal burn?

The burning time depends on the size, density and material of the charcoal and on the air supply at the bowl. Larger cubes have more mass and usually glow longer than small ones. Many manufacturers state a burning time on the pack. There is no general figure, so it is worth checking the respective manufacturer’s information.

What is the difference between natural charcoal and quick-lighting charcoal?

Natural charcoal, usually pressed from coconut shells, is heated through completely with a charcoal lighter, gas burner or hot plate. Quick-lighting charcoal contains an ignition agent and can be lit with a lighter. It is ready faster but usually burns for a shorter time. Both types release carbon monoxide while glowing and need good ventilation.

How do you light natural charcoal correctly?

Natural charcoal is heated on an electric charcoal lighter or in a charcoal basket over a gas burner and turned in between. It is ready when it glows on all sides and has a grey surface. Light it outdoors or with the window open, on a non-flammable surface, because glowing charcoal releases carbon monoxide.

When is shisha charcoal ready?

Shisha charcoal is ready when it glows evenly red on all sides and is covered with a fine grey layer of ash. Black spots or a black core show that it has not yet heated through. How long this takes depends on cube size, moisture and lighter. Damp charcoal takes longer.

Where can you buy shisha charcoal?

Shisha charcoal is offered in shisha specialist shops, tobacconists and online retail. In the Holster Shop it can be found under shisha charcoal. Pressed cubes made from coconut shells are the most widespread; edge lengths of 25 to 28 mm are common.

Frequently asked questions

How many pieces of charcoal do I need?

That depends on the bowl, the attachment or heat management device and the charcoal size. It is advisable to start with a small amount of charcoal and add more if needed.

How do I store shisha charcoal?

Dry and airtight, because moisture makes lighting harder.

May I light charcoal indoors?

Only with very good ventilation and a suitable charcoal lighter, preferably outdoors or at an open window. A CO detector is recommended.
